The
SPCA:
Last Valentines day, the Ontario Society for the Prevention
of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). exercised a search warrant
at Cherry Valley Kennels. 125 dogs dogs, including
Chows, Pomeranians, American Eskimos and Keeshonds
were rescued from horrific lack of care. The remains of
other dogs were found on site. This story has a happy
ending... on March 31st the OSPCA put many of these
rescued dogs up for adoption, and will ensure they have
happy homes with lots of treats and a good park to run in.
A rescue and adoption such as this has a financial cost, one in
excess of $100,000, but the Ontario SPCA is determined to investigate
and prosecute breeders that fail to adhere to standards. Animal
cruelty is a sad reality. Puppy mills are more concerned with
profit than the care of the dogs in their kennels, and as a result
many dogs suffer after their useful reproductive life. Last year,
the society responded to over 15,000 reports of animal abuse in
Ontario.
The Ontario OSPCA is a non-profit charitable organization, dedicated
to the welfare of all animals <ETH> from birds to bats,
rats to raccoons, dogs to deer and cats to cows. They are the
responsible agency for enforcing the newly enacted Bill 129, which
sets standards of care that breeders of dogs for sale must adhere
to. (edited version of "Ontario SPCA lays first charges under
